We had a great turn out at the Camp Washington Community Council meeting last night, with many impassioned bicyclists advocating for themselves and their fellow bikers who use Spring Grove avenue to get around daily. Queen City Bike is grateful to the Camp Washington Community Council for inviting us into the conversation and giving us the opportunity to share with them how important Spring Grove Avenue is to us.

If you are interested in reading a more thorough recap of last night’s meeting, please check out this post by local bicyclist Sherman Cahal, who was present last night here.

The DOT will report back from the meeting last night and make a decision on how to move forward. Keep informed about the progress of the Spring Grove bike lanes on our website and Facebook Page. Show your support for the lanes by getting out for a ride, grab a bite at Camp Washington Chili and supporting other local businesses in the Camp!

The key to confident cycling lies in your powers of observation. The safest and most competent traffic cyclists are not necessarily bold or fast. They are observant. They identify patterns in the chaos and they take advantage of them.

One thing most cyclists find intimidating is having a mass of speeding cars bear down upon them. Truthfully, it can be disconcerting to the most experienced and confident cyclist. But what the observant cyclist knows is that the mass of cars won’t last forever. Traffic lights create waves of traffic. And between them are gaps with few, or no, cars.

Queen City Blinkies is a bike safety program of the Greater Cincinnati bicycling community and the Ohio Bicycle Federation. The goal of the Queen City Blinkies program is to provide front-and-rear visibility lights (called “Blinkies”) to bicycle riders in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Queen City Blinkies program also provides safety education so that all people — children and adults, motorists and cyclists — can share the road safely.

The Queen City Blinkies program was established in response to two tragic bicycle fatalities on the streets of Cincinnati that occurred late in the summer of 2012. Beginning on November 1 at the Bond Hill Recreation Center - near the location of the second bicycle fatality – local bicycle activists have staged 20 Blinkie-installation sessions where 1000 red-and-white Blinkie light sets have been given away and installed on bicycles. More than 400 of these Blinkie light sets were installed at ten recreation centers operated by the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC). Other Blinkie-installation events have occurred at schools, churches, businesses and other public venues across the Cincinnati area.

The Blinkie donation-and-installation program has been staffed entirely by volunteers: 42 local bicycle activists from organization such as Queen City Bike, Cincinnati Cycle Club, MOBO Bicycle Co-op and 7 Hills Racing. Queen City Blinkies has been funded entirely by private donations, with approximately $9,000+ donated to date.

Phase I of the bicycle safety initiative was completed in mid-December. Additional funding is being secured and Phase II of Queen City Blinkies will begin in the middle of January 2013, with 1000 additional Blinkie light sets to be installed. People interested in hosting a Blinkie installation session in their community should contact Nern Ostendorf at Queen City Bike - nern@queencitybike.org or 513-205-3059.

The City of Cincinnati can assist the Queen City Blinkies program by continuing the City’s support and funding of the Cincinnati Department of Transportation’s (DOTE) implementation of the 2010 Bicycle Transportation Plan.
